Redefining Tragedy: The Stunning Revamp of a Classic Tale |
A bold, emotionally raw reimagining of a classic tragedy is coming to Greenville.
South Carolina Experimental Theatre Initiative (SCETI) presents MEDEA, a contemporary re-envisioning of the ancient story, running February 27–March 1 at 7:30 PM at The Playhouse at Furman University.
|
This production has been more than five years in the making — evolving through workshops, rewrites, and collaborative devising before arriving as a fully mounted performance.
Rather than placing Medea safely in myth, this version drops her into a modern psychological landscape, confronting betrayal, rage, and survival with unsettling immediacy.
Founded by Cary Doyle and Savvy Thompson, SCETI draws inspiration from experimental theatre innovators including Anne Bogart, the SITI Company, and the Tectonic Theatre Project. That influence is evident in MEDEA’s physically driven storytelling and immersive ensemble work.
Following its Greenville run, MEDEA has been selected for the Southeastern Theatre Conference Fringe Festival, expanding the Upstate’s artistic voice onto a regional stage.
In keeping with its mission to make theatre accessible, SCETI is offering a Pay Less If You Need / Pay More If You Can ticket model.
Tickets start at $5, with a suggested full-price option of $20.
All artists involved in MEDEA are based right here in the Upstate of South Carolina. |
“If you’re ready for theatre that doesn’t play it safe, MEDEA runs February 27 through March 1 at The Playhouse at Furman. Tickets start at just five bucks — grab yours, bring a friend, and experience this one for yourself.” |
